Multi-purpose chair Chassis

340 range Design: Stefan Diez

Innovative. Multi-purpose. Appealing.

Virtually no other chair has caused more of a stir in the design world than multi-purpose chair Chassis. And it’s no surprise. Because the distinctive and ground-breaking design of the frame, consisting of deep drawn sheet steel, indicates a highly innovative manufacturing process called space frame technology from the automotive industry. This technology combines elastic comfort, durability and strength with the precision and elegance of a fascinating design. The combination of a variety of unitary, membrane-like seat- and backrest shells produces models that set any design concept apart. Available in monochrome versions with through-dyed plastic shells, or covered with robust, informal or elegant fabrics, or perhaps with slim-line upholstery and covered with leather, Chassis is a trendsetting statement in any backdrop. It’s an ideal choice for meeting rooms, recreational areas, workshops and studios, customer service areas, hotel rooms, restaurants or conferences. Quite simply, it’s a chair for contemporary life styles.

High class.

Seeking more than just a chair? They’ve been around for 5000 years. And if you thought improving their design was impossible, think again. Think Chassis. From New York to Frankfurt, Sydney or Singapore, London, Essen or Munich, the superbly fluid and distinctive form makes it a popular design icon worldwide.

High tech. The secret of its elegant appeal lies in the way it’s produced.
The method is based on car-body manufacture, which has been applied
to produce chairs for the first time. Very strong sheet steel is teased into
precise forms, welded by robot and powder coated. Then it‘s combined
with the shell to create an attractive piece of furniture.

Variety. Some 33 combinations of frame colours and seat shells result in a surprisingly diverse range of interpretations. The various options turn Chassis into a customised design tool for studios, meeting rooms, cafeterias, showrooms, dining rooms, hotels and conference spaces … Have any ideas of your own? Be our guest.

341/7 Chassis outside? No problem. A special dipping method used when coating the frame makes the outdoor version weatherproof.

341/5 The multi-purpose chair seat and backrest frame are one perfectly shaped element and the shells are attached without any visible joins

341/6 Upholstery, fine stitching and a leather cover turn Chassis into a striking but sophisticated chair for meetings – quite simply design at its best.

At the International Furniture Fair in Milan, Wilkhahn and designer Stefan Diez exhibited "coloured" multi-purpose chair Chassis models with upholstered seat shells for the first time at an exclusive exhibition at Spotti. The concept for the new chair models originated in close cooperation with fashion designer Farah Ebahimi. The show revealed a powerful chair to numerous visitors from around the world: with all of its conciseness and independence, the Chassis fits into diverse lifestyles.
